STILLWATER, Okla. - After a four-game road swing, Oklahoma State's women's basketball team returned home on Sunday with an 80-51 win over Coppin State in front of 2,232 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowgirls, who were playing in Stillwater for the first time since their upset win over then-No. 19 Georgia Tech on Nov. 15, improved to 5-2 on the year, while the Eagles fell to 2-4.
"The lesson we learned today is that just coming home doesn't solve all of the problems. I think we've been in some tough situations here to start this year, and I think that a young team comes home sometimes and thinks `We are home so we can relax,' which is what you saw tonight," Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke said.
OSU got off to a slow start offensively and trailed 13-8 at the 13:33 mark before going on a 24-2 run over the next 10 minutes.
"We didn't get off to a great start and I think that they thought we could just show up and win the ball game," Budke said. "If we learned that tonight in the pre-conference schedule, than it was absolutely worth it. There was definitely some good things tonight, but we have plenty of ammunition for practice the next couple of days."
The Cowgirls finished with four players reaching double figures and were led by a pair of seniors as Tegan Cunningham scored a game-high 19 points and Andrea Riley added 18 points.
Cunningham made seven of her 13 shots from the floor and added eight rebounds, while Riley was responsible for eight of the squad's 17 assists on the day.
Newcomers Precious Robinson and Toni Young each recorded career highs in the scoring column. Robinson finished with 17 points on a 6-of-9 shooting effort. The junior from San Diego, Calif., native also finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
Young added 12 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Defensively, the Cowgirls held the Eagles in check as they shot just 37 percent from the floor and missed all 11 of their attempts from the 3-point line.
Shante Cummings led CSU with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
OSU will be back in action on Dec. 13 when it travels to Vermont for its final road trip of the non-conference schedule.
