Oklahoma State's women's golf team opened play at the NCAA Championship on Tuesday with a 6-over-par 294 to stand alone in seventh place at UNM Championship Course.
The seventh-ranked Cowgirls finished the day one shot behind Denver and Wake Forest and just five shots out of second place. UCLA and Auburn both carded 289s on the day to hold the No. 2 spot at the par-72, 6,424-yard layout.
Southern California, the top-ranked squad nationally, opened with a 284 and came in as the only team under par for the day at 4-under.
“We are happy with our first-round score and got a solid team effort today,” OSU head coach Laura Matthews said. “We are in the mix and feel our best golf is in front of us.”
Wake Forest's Nannette Hill fired a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to tie the course record and holds a two-shot lead over the field in the individual race.
A trio of players carded 73s for the Cowgirls and finished tied for 23rd place.
Junior Karin Kinnerud put together a round that featured three birdies and made the turn with an even-par 36 before closing with a 37 on her inward nine to finish with her 1-over score.
Senior Tammy Clelland turned at 1-under and benefited from a stretch of three birdies in four holes before carding a 73 in her first NCAA Championship round as a Cowgirl.
Junior Amanda Johnson made the turn at 2-over, but took advantage of birdies on both par-5s on the back nine en route to her 1-over tally.
Freshman Jaclyn Sweeney steadied herself after posting bogeys on her first three holes, playing the remainder of her round at level par to finish with a 75 and tied for 53rd place.
Junior Pernilla Lindberg stood at 5-over through seven holes, but rallied as well with one birdie and 10 pars to close out her day with a 76, finishing tied for 68th place.
For tomorrow's second round, the Cowgirls will tee off in the afternoon wave at 12:20 p.m. (MST) and will be paired with Texas A&M and Virginia.
