Cowgirl Golf To Pursue Big 12 Title At Karsten Creek
For the first time since the formation of the Big 12 Conference, Oklahoma State's women's golf team will host the conference tournament this weekend at Karsten Creek. The ninth-ranked Cowgirls enter play looking for their first league title since 2005. That same year also produced OSU's last individual medalist in the event, Annie Thurman-Young. The Cowgirls will begin play at 9:50 a.m. on Friday and will be paired with Iowa State and Texas. The trio will begin on the No. 1 tee at the par-72, 6,210-yard layout. The 54-hole event will consist of 18 holes each day beginning with Friday's first round and concluding on Sunday.
OSU At The Big 12 Championship
OSU leads the league with its five Big 12 crowns. The Cowgirls first won the event in 1999 in Boulder, Colo. OSU then began its run of three consecutive championships with its victory in 2001 in Harvester, Iowa. After winning the 2002 tourney in Manhattan, Kan., the Cowgirls closed out their string with their triumph in Columbia, Mo. in 2003. OSU claimed its last title in 2005 in Austin, Texas.
Cowgirls At The Big 12 Championship
OSU has been equally successful in the individual Big 12 race as it has been in the team race, having five players claim medalist honors during the history of the event. In 1999, Maria Bodén became the first Cowgirl to win the event and regained the title in 2001. Emma Zackrisson grabbed top honors in 2002, while Annie Thurman followed two years later with back-to-back victories in 2004 and 2005.
Big 12 Rewind ... 2007 Big 12 Championship
Waco, Texas - Four Cowgirls finished in the top 10 individually, but Oklahoma State's ninth-ranked women's golf team finished second to Texas A&M for the second-consecutive season at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship at the Ridgewood Country Club. Texas A&M finished with a 911 while the Cowgirls finished with a 916. Four Cowgirls finished in the top-10 individually, each garnering all-tournament team honors. Freshman Sarah Bradley and sophomore Pernilla Lindberg tied for fourth place with Kelly Jacques of Oklahoma and Texas A&M's Danielle McVeigh. Those four finished with a three-round total of 229, eight strokes behind individual champion Amanda Costner of Kansas (221). Knoll finished second with a 224, while Nebraska's Elli Brown finished third at 225. Two other OSU golfers tied for eighth. Sophomores Karin Kinnerud and Amanda Johnson each finished with a 230 and tied Baylor's Hannah Burke and Maddie Augustsson of Missouri for eighth place.
Current Cowgirls At The Big 12 Championship
While OSU's current crop of players is looking to capture its first conference title, the squad's three players with Big 12 experience have all enjoyed success in the event. Juniors Amanda Johnson, Karin Kinnerud and Pernilla Lindberg have combined to make five Big 12 starts with four of the five resulting in top-10 finishes. Last year, all three finished among the top 10 on the individual leaderboard led by Lindberg (T-4th), while Johnson and Kinnerud tied for eighth. Two years ago, Lindberg finished seventh as a freshman.
What 2 Watch 4
The Cowgirls have only finished lower than third once in the event and that was a fifth-place showing in 1997 ... in addition to their five titles, the Cowgirls have finished second three times and third twice ... junior Pernilla Lindberg will be looking for her third consecutive top-10 finish in the event ... freshman Jaclyn Sweeney has finished in the top 10 in each of the squad's last two outings ... a win would be OSU's third of the season, marking its highest win total since winning three events during the 2002-03 season.
