Cowgirl Golf Claims First Victory At Wildcat Invitational
February 28, 2008 | Cowgirl Golf
TUCSON, Ariz.--Behind an impressive showing from freshman Jaclyn Sweeney, Oklahoma State's women's golf team earned its first victory of the spring season on Wednesday at the Wildcat Invitational.
Entering the final round as the 36-hole leader at Arizona National Golf Club, the Cowgirls carded their second consecutive 298 to finish at 884, 32-over, and two shots clear of Southern California and Duke. The team title was OSU's first since last spring's victory at the NCAA West Regional.
“I think the difference this week was the way our girls finished rounds two and three,” head coach Laura Matthews said. “The course was playing tough with the windy conditions and slow play, but the fact we were able to finish strong set us apart in the end.”
Competing in just her second collegiate event, Sweeney posted a closing round of 73 to finish tied for second place with USC's Belen Mozo at 216 and earn her first career top-five finish.
Duke's Amanda Blumenherst finished with an even-par total of 213 to claim individual medalist honors.
Senior Tammy Clelland just missed earning her second top 10 as a Cowgirl, finishing in 11th place. The Taupo, New Zealand native carded a 76 on Wednesday to finish with a 9-over 222 total.
A pair of Cowgirls also produced top-15 showings as juniors Karin Kinnerud and Pernilla Lindberg were among the group tied for 15th place at 223. Kinnerud turned in a 74 during her third round, while Lindberg carded a 75.
Junior Amanda Johnson rounded out the OSU starting five with an 83 to come in at 244 and alone in 69th place.
