OSU Golfers Produce Top-10 Performances Over The Weekend
August 06, 2007 | Cowgirl Golf
A pair of former Oklahoma State golfers recorded top-10 finishes in their respective events this weekend as Linda Wessberg tied for seventh at the Women's British Open and Scott Verplank tied for ninth place at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
For Wessberg, the finish continued a strong season that has her on the brink of earning a berth on the European Solheim Cup squad. The Gothenburg, Sweden native carded a 2-over 294 total at St. Andrews' Old Course to move from eighth to fifth place in the standings with two events remaining. The top five players on the list earn automatic berths into the match play event.
An honorable mention All-American in 2003 for the Cowgirls, Wessberg earned her third career victory earlier this year at the Verdiorbis Open de France and also has a runner-up finish at the Golf Punk Ladies English Open to her credit.
Verplank posted a 3-over 283 total at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio to earn his seventh top 10 of the season. The former Cowboy All-American and NCAA champion has now finished in the top 10 in five of his last six starts and has one victory to his credit this season, winning the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.
The 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup squad member has now won more than $2.3 million this season on Tour and currently stands in 12th place in the FedEx Cup standings with 9,949 points.
