Cowgirl Golfers Take a Step Back at NCAA Championships
May 25, 2007 | Cowgirl Golf
“Our expectations were pretty high today,” said OSU head coach Laura Matthews. “We wanted to go out in the morning and post a low number. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The weather was a lot tougher than it had been, but I think it was our short game that really let us down.”
“We spent a lot of time on the Bermuda greens during the practice rounds, but for whatever reason, we're not putting very well on them,” Matthews said.
Cowgirl sophomore Pernilla Lindberg was OSU's top scorer of the day, carding a three-over 75. It was the best round of the tournament for Lindberg, who is ranked nationally in the top-10.
“I started hitting the ball better again today,” said Lindberg. “The first two days, I had missed with my driver, which cost me a few shots. Today, I was managing the course better, but I didn't have any touch around the greens. I gave myself a lot of good chances at birdies, but with no touch, I couldn't convert them.”
Top-ranked Duke remains in first place as the Blue Devils gained one stroke on the competition. Purdue moved past UCLA and into second place, eight strokes behind Duke. UCLA, which was seven strokes behind the Blue Devils, carded a 299 and is now 13 strokes off the pace. Georgia is in sole possession of fourth place, while Vanderbilt and Stanford are tied for fifth place.
The wind continued to be a factor as scores climbed more than a full stroke per golfer as opposed to the first two days.
“The wind is only a factor when you're hitting the ball poorly,” Lindberg said. “I was hitting the ball well off the tee and on my approach shots, so it wasn't affecting me as much as it could have.”
Purdue's Christel Boeljon widened her lead for the individual title with a three-under 69 and is now five strokes ahead of second-place Paola Moreno of USC. Those two individuals are the only golfers under par for the tournament.
The top 10 is still attainable by Oklahoma State, which sits 11 strokes back of Louisville in 10th place. The Cowgirls will play with Arizona and Arizona State during Friday's final round, teeing off beginning at 8:50 a.m. ET. The Arizona schools are tied for 13th place, five strokes ahead of OSU.
