Cowgirls Tie for Team Title at West Regional
Oklahoma States Cowgirl golf team finished first at an NCAA regional tournament for the first time since the NCAA adopted the format in 1993 at the West Regional, tying Stanford for the top spot. OSU sophomore Pernilla Lindberg claimed medalist honors, her third victory of the season. Trailing by four strokes after the first round, Oklahoma State blistered the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club course on day two, shooting a 290. The Cowgirls had a four-stroke lead entering the final round and carded a nine-over 293 to tie the Cardinal. Top-ranked Arizona State finished third, just two strokes back, while Denver finished fourth and BYU and UC Irvine tied for fifth. Lindberg shot 68-68-70 for a three-day total of 206, tying for the lowest three-round tournament in school history. Sophomore Amanda Johnson was solid throughout the tournament and finished tied for seventh, her best collegiate finish. Freshman Sarah Bradley shot 72-73 during the final two rounds and finished 15th individually. It marked OSUs sixth top-four finish in the last seven tournaments.
Oklahoma State at the NCAA Championships
The Cowgirls are competing in their seventh-consecutive NCAA Championships as a team, and making their 16th appearance overall. OSUs inaugural appearance was in the first-ever NCAA Womens Golf Championships in 1982, when the Cowgirls finished third. Oklahoma State has 10 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, and five top-five finishes, including three in the last six years. OSUs best performance at the NCAA Championships came three years ago in Opelika, Ala., when the Cowgirls finished as national runner-up to UCLA. OSU has two third-place finishes, first in 1982 and then again in 1989. The Cowgirls have finished fifth in two of the last six tournaments, first in 2001 at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort, and then at the 2003 Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., at Purdues Kampen Golf Course. In 2004, Karin Sjödin had the highest finish by a Cowgirl individual at the NCAA Championships as she finished second. It marked just the seventh time in school history that a Cowgirl had finished in the top-10 individually.
Cowgirls Have Recent Success at NCAAs
Oklahoma State is one of just seven teams that have competed in each of the last six NCAA Championships, including this season. The Cowgirls, along with Duke and Purdue, have joined four Pac 10 squads in an elite group that has made each of the past seven NCAA Championships. Those four Pac 10 schools are USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Stanford. Duke has six top-10 finishes in the last six NCAA Championships and is the only team with more top-10 finishes than Oklahoma States four.
Cowgirls Garner Postseason Accolades
Oklahoma State had three golfers earn All-Big 12 honors this season. Sophomores Pernilla Lindberg and Karin Kinnerud, along with freshman Sarah Bradley, were all named to the all-conference team. It was the second such honor for both Lindberg and Kinnerud, as Lindberg was an All-Big 12 first team selection a year ago and Kinnerud was a second-team selection last season. Bradley was one of three freshman named to the 2007 All-Big 12 team. Prior to this season, only five freshman had been named to the All-Big 12 first team. Bradley is one of four Cowgirl freshmen to receive the honor. All three Cowgirl golfers, along with sophomore Amanda Johnson, were also members of the Big 12 Championships all-tournament team. In the past, the conference coaches voted on two separate five-person squads, a first and second team. This year, it was decided to vote on one 10-person team.
Four Cowgirls Named Academic All-Big 12
Oklahoma State had four golfers named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team, tying for the most by any school this season. Sophomores Amanda Johnson and Karin Kinnerud both qualified with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, while senior Mallorie Underwood and sophomore Pernilla Lindberg both made the first team with a 3.2 or better GPA.
Lindberg Named National Golfer of the Week
Cowgirl sophomore Pernilla Lindberg was named the National Player of the Week by Golfweek.com for the period ending May 13. She won the individual title at the NCAA West Regional by seven strokes over her nearest competitor. It was the first such honor for a Cowgirl golfer in recent memory.
