Cowgirl Golfers Take Lead Entering Final Round
May 12, 2007 | Cowgirl Golf
“Our girls really kept their composure and managed the course really well,” said OSU head coach Laura Matthews. “On this golf course, if you don't do that, it will jump up and bite you. There are three holes (Nos. 15-17) that they call the 'Lava Triangle'. Especially on those holes, our golfers have really handled themselves well."
Cowgirl sophomore Pernilla Lindberg recorded a three-under-par 68, matching her first-round score, and takes a five-stroke lead into Saturday's final round. She finished her round with six birdies, one bogey and a double bogey. She was three-under over the final 10 holes.
“Pernilla played very smart and did a great job today,” Matthews said. “She has been putting on a ball-striking clinic. She's hitting the ball very well. The way she's playing, it would be hard for her not to be six under right now.”
Oklahoma State has a six-stroke lead over 11th-ranked Stanford and is nine strokes ahead of top-ranked Arizona State. UC Irvine is in fourth place with a 597, 16 strokes back of the Cowgirls. Fourth-ranked Pepperdine is in sixth place with a 600, while eighth-ranked is tied for 10th place with a 613.
Cowgirl sophomore Amanda Johnson also turned in a solid round, finishing three over par with a 74. She is currently tied for third place individually. Her best finish this season is an eighth-place outing at the Big 12 Championships, OSU's last tournament.
“I've been hitting the ball really well,” said Johnson, a Jenks, Okla., native. “I've been hitting a lot of fairways and greens. I haven't putted as well as I should. Playing at Karsten Creek everyday, we're used to having to keep the ball in the fairway and on the greens.”
Since the NCAA began using the regional format in 1993, Oklahoma State's top outing was a runner-up finish in 2003. OSU has six top-five finishes, including five of the last six seasons.
The tournament concludes on Saturday with a final round of 18 holes. The top-eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-25, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
