Pernilla Lindberg Leads NCAA West Regional
May 11, 2007 | Cowgirl Golf
“I was striking the ball really well today,” Lindberg said following her round. “I don't remember hitting the ball as well as I did today. I gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities and made many of them.”
Cowgirl sophomore Amanda Johnson also played very well, recording a one-under 70. That total tied her for third place individually, and helped push OSU into a tie for second place, just four strokes back of team leader Stanford.
A Jenks, Okla., native, Johnson was very steady throughout the day. She finished her round with three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.
Lindberg birdied three of her first six holes as the Cowgirls started the round on the back nine. Her only miscue was a double bogey on the par-4 18th hole, just before the turn. She finished her round with three birdies and just one bogey on the final seven holes.
“The back nine is very different from the front nine,” Lindberg said. “The back nine is very tight, surrounded by lava, so I left my driver in the bag and it paid off.”
Pepperdine is in fourth place with a 292, one stroke behind the Cowgirls. Top-ranked Arizona State is in fifth with a 294.
The tournament will continue on Friday with another round of 18holes and conclude on Saturday with a final round of 18. The top-eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-25, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
