Cowboys Extend Win Streak in Thriller Against Aggies
April 16, 2007 | Cowboy Tennis
Oklahoma State's 14th-ranked men's tennis team extended its win streak to 11 with a thrilling, 4-3, win over No. 28 Texas A&M (14, 1-4) in Stillwater Sunday.
“I am glad our guys sucked it up and came back to win this match,” head coach James Wadley said. “It is a tribute to this team and the way they battle. It came down to a couple of points and we were able to pull those out. I also thought our crowd was great.”
The Cowboys (15-1, 3-0) have not lost since February 16 and have won the last four against Texas A&M.
While the Cowboys' win streak stayed intact, another came to an end as OSU found its self in an unfamiliar position as it lost the doubles point for the first time in eight matches. The Pokes did manage one win after the 45th-ranked tandem of Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov defeated Jerry Makowski and Brett Joelson, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
While it was the last regular season home match for a couple of Cowboys, it was a pair of freshman who got the Pokes going early in singles play.
Nedovyesov continued to make his case as one of the top freshman in the country as he evened up the score by defeating the 67th-ranked Makowski, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. The freshman has won his last 10 and has knocked off seven ranked opponents this season.
After a Cowboy loss at No. 3 singles, freshman Dymtro Petrov downed Matt Bain, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles to win his ninth straight.
The Aggies picked up a win at No. 6 singles to push O-State to the brink of defeat with two matches remaining.
Artie Burmistrau kept the Cowboys alive with a huge win at No. 5 singles. The senior defeated Joelson in a back and fourth match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The senior has won his last eight singles matches.
The match came down to No. 2 singles and 29th-ranked Ivan Puchkarov. The junior took down Conner Pollock in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, to give the Pokes the win.
“I am real happy with the way Ivan came back,” Wadley said. “He is one of the best players we have ever had under pressure.”
The Cowboys will next be in action Tuesday when they travel to Norman to resume the Bedlam match that was suspended due to rain last week. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
