Laura Matthews Makes Cut At LPGA's Canadian Open
August 12, 2006 | Cowgirl Golf
The second-year Cowgirl head coach was the only amateur to make it to the weekend in the 156-player field. After posting a 75 on Thursday, Matthews carded the 2-over total during her second round to stand in a tie for 68th place with 15 other players at 149.
“Being that this is only my second LPGA event, I had the goal of coming in here, making the cut and getting the chance to play on the weekend and I was able to do that,” Matthews said.
“I don't feel like I have played my best golf yet. I made four birdies today, but I seemed to have a bogey that went along with it. I will try to minimize my mistakes and put together some good rounds this weekend.”
After a bogey on her first hole, Matthews got back to even with a birdie on No. 4 before back-to-back bogeys moved her to 2-over. With a birdie on No. 9, she made the turn with a 1-over 37 total and got back to even with a birdie at No. 11. Matthews stood at 3-over for the day heading to the 18th, where she recorded a birdie to make the cut on the number.
Matthews made her LPGA debut at the 2005 Canadian Open, missing the cut by two strokes. She will begin her third round at 8:24 a.m. local time at the par-72, 6,611-yard layout and will be paired with Jessica Shepley.
