Cowgirl Golfers lead Big 12 Championships
April 17, 2006 | Cowgirl Golf
“Today was a total team effort,” said head coach Laura Matthews. “We were disappointed in the (team) score we shot. None of us thought we played particularly well. Jenny had a good day, but overall, nobody thought they played well. It's a bonus that we're leading after the first round.”
OSU has three golfers in the top-10 individually, led by senior Jennifer Karr, who is in third place after recording a one-over-par 73. She trails individual leader Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M by four strokes. Texas Tech's Gloriana Soto is in second place with an even-par 72.
“We didn't have ideal conditions, but the weather wasn't a factor today,” Matthews said. “On this golf course, you have to hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens. Today, we didn't do that. Other than Jenny, that (hitting fairways) is where we struggled the most. During Sunday's practice round, everyone was hitting their irons very well, and they were really disappointed that they didn't get to take advantage of that by hitting the fairways and giving themselves a chance to take advantage of their iron play.”
The Cowgirls carded a 13-over 301 during the first round and lead Texas A&M's 302 by one stroke. Nebraska and Baylor are tied for third at 307, while Texas Tech and Iowa State are tied for fifth at 309.
Cowgirl junior Candie Herrera is tied for fifth place with a 75, while freshman Pernilla Lindberg is tied with five other golfers for 10th at 76. Freshman Karin Kinnerud is tied for 16th with a 77, while junior Mallorie Underwood rounds out the Cowgirl golfers in 27th place with a 78.
Oklahoma State has won four of the last five Big 12 Championships and five overall in nine years of the league.
The tournament will continue on Tuesday with another round of 18 holes and conclude on Wednesday with a final round of 18.
