OSU's second-year coach shot a two-under-par 70 on the Stollenbosch Golf Club course, one of two courses being played for the Championships. Matthews carded five birdies and two bogeys during her round. She is tied with South Africa's Kelli Shean, five strokes behind individual leader Rikako Morita of Japan, who finished with a seven-under 65.
The Canadians are in sixth place, five strokes behind team leader Japan. The Japan squad shot a seven-under 137. Sweden, Chinese Taipei and South Africa are tied for second place at 139, while Germany is in fifth place at 141. The United States is in eighth place with an even-par 144.
This is Matthews' second appearance in the Women's World Amateur Championships, as she and current teammate Mary Ann Lapoint finished tied with the U.S. for second place at the 2004 Women's World Amateur. Former Cowgirl Karin Sjödin was on the Swedish team that won the 2004 championship by three strokes over Canada and the United States.
Conducted by the International Golf Federation (formerly the World Amateur Golf Council), which comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 100 countries, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
The tournament will continue Thursday through Saturday with a round of 18 holes each day. The team champion will be presented with the Espirito Santo Trophy.
