Cowgirl Golfers move into seventh place at NCAA West Regionals
May 07, 2005 | Cowgirl Golf
Cowgirl junior Karin Sjödin carded a two-over-par 74 during Friday's round and has moved into a tie for sixth place individually. The Swedish native had three birdies to offset three bogeys. Her only major flaw was a double bogey on the par-four No. 1 hole.
USC leads the team race with a team score of 595 following Friday's round. Tennessee, the leader after the first round, dropped six strokes behind the Trojans with a 601. Georgia is in third place with a 602, and there is a three-way tie for fourth. The UCLA Bruins, who carded the best round of the day, moved up into a tie with California and BYU at 603, two strokes ahead of Oklahoma State.
Senior Annie Thurman-Young, the two-time Big 12 individual champion, improved dramatically after Thursday's score. Despite recording bogeys on her first three holes Friday, she finished the round with a three-over 75, moving her up 22 spots to 49th place. Sophomore Mallorie Underwood scored a 76, and remains tied for 16th place.
Sophomore Candie Herrera recorded a 76 as well, and moved up 16 spots to 55th place. Ali Griffin, an Edmond, Okla., product, finished with a solid 79, and has a two-day total of 157.
The tournament, played at the New Mexico State University Golf Course, will conclude on Saturday with a final round of 18 holes. The top-eight teams and top-two individuals not affiliated with those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 17-20, at the Meadows Course in Sunriver, Ore.
