Cowgirl Golfers maintain one-stroke lead over Texas
April 23, 2005 | Cowgirl Golf
"I'm not really very comfortable with my lead, because the course is so tough," said Thurman-Young. "I do like the tougher conditions, because it eliminates half of the field."
Once again, the day started out cloudy and cold with winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. Thurman maintained her steady play and, despite being two-over through 11 holes, birdied three of the final seven to finish with her second-consecutive sub-par round. This is the second-consecutive year that Thurman has led the conference championships after two rounds. She is the defending Big 12 individual champion.
"The key for me is to stay patient, and not get mad out there," Thurman-Young said. "I need to stay aggressive and take it low again."
Junior Karin Sjodin, who was in third place after day one, had four double bogeys and finished with an 80, dropping her into a tie for fifth place. Sophomore Candie Herrera moved up two spots into the tie at fifth place after carding a five-over 77. The Apple Valley, Calif., native eagled the par-five 14th hole, balancing out a double bogey on No. 6.
Baylor and Missouri are tied for third place, 17 strokes behind the Cowgirls at 619. Texas A&M is in fifth place with a 626, while Texas Tech is in sixth with a 628. Nebraska (629), Colorado (630), Iowa State (631), Kansas State (634), Kansas (642) and Oklahoma (642) round out the team scores.
"We also still have the team title on the line, and obviously, I want to win both of them," concluded Thurman-Young. "We just need to play the way we're capable of playing."
Oklahoma State will tee off on Sunday morning beginning at 8:50 a.m., as the tournament concludes on Sunday with a final round of 18 holes.
