Cowgirl Golfers lead Big 12 Championships
April 22, 2005 | Cowgirl Golf
The day started out cloudy but was soon sunny and hot as scores rose with the temperature. Thurman, who was four under after eight holes and remained there after 16, bogeyed her last two holes to finish at two under. Junior Karin Sjodin, a first-team All-Big 12 selection, is in third place after day one. She also struggled late, as she was four under through 13 holes and finished one under after a birdie on her final hole.
"It's a very short course, so bad shots can often turn out pretty good," said Sjodin. "There are a lot of banks, so you can hit it wide and it will still turn out good. I would prefer a course that was longer and more narrow, where you have to hit it long and straight. However, good players will still be able to score well on this course."
Cowgirl sophomore Candie Herrera finished Friday's round with a 74, good for a tie for seventh place. Fellow sophomore Mallorie Underwood finished with an 80, while Cowgirl sophomore Ali Griffin carded an 85.
Baylor, Nebraska and Texas Tech are tied for third place with team scores of 305. Missouri is in sixth place with a 306, and Colorado is in seventh with a 307. Texas A&M finished with a 310, good for eighth place, while Kansas is in ninth with a 311. Oklahoma rounds out the top-10 teams with a 314.
"We don't think about the team score that much," Sjodin said. "We just go out and try to play well. None of us played our best today. So tomorrow, we just need to go out and play even better."
This is the second-consecutive year that Thurman has led the conference championships after the first round. She is the defending Big 12 individual champion.
Oklahoma State will tee off on Saturday morning beginning at 8:50 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with a final round of 18 holes.
