Cowgirls' Thurman leads NCAA Championships
May 22, 2003 | Cowgirl Golf
"We started out really strong and had a pretty good flow going," said OSU head coach Amy Weeks. "The wind picked up for us on our second nine holes and we lost a few shots here and there. All in all, we're very pleased with our performance. We're hanging in there, and that's important over a four-day event. I think we feel like we can play better golf. We certainly haven't put our best foot forward on this golf course."
Sophomore Annie Thurman continued her consistent play by scoring a two-over-par 74 during Wednesdays round. She sits atop the individual leaderboard with a two-day total of 147, one stroke ahead of Washington States Kim Welch.
"I'm pleased with how I played today," said Thurman. "I've been trying just to focus on one shot at a time. We'll see what happens since we still have two days to play. We're only half way done. I'll get some rest tonight and hopefully play well again tomorrow."
The Highland Park, Utah, native made an eagle on the 316 yard, par four 14th hole. She hit a nine-iron punch shot from 129 yards out which bounced twice on the green before falling in the cup.
Pepperdine moved up to third place with the best round of the day a 298. The Wave is two strokes back of the Cowgirls. Ohio State is in fourth, while Auburn and Florida are tied for fifth. The Big 12s Texas is in eighth place with a 627, while Nebraska is in 22nd place with a 653.
Freshman Karin Sjödin is tied for 15th place after carding a 77 during the second round. Seniors Linda Wessberg and Christi Cano are tied for 29th place. Sophomore Jenny Karr has a two-day total of 164. "I don't feel like I played well today," said Sjödin. "I didn't hit the ball very well. I made some stupid mistakes on the putting greens and around them. I three-putted the last hole, missed a lot of fairways, and had a hard time making putts. Tomorrow, I want to hit the b all solidly and do my best."
The tournament will continue on Thursday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Friday with a final round of 18. The Cowgirls will be paired with USC and Pepperdine.
