Pokes wrap up exhibition action

OSU is coming off a 90-82 win over an Athletes First squad last week, its opening game of the season. EA Sports is 2-8 during its tour of the west/midwest after a 94-90 loss at TCU Friday night, and plays New Mexico Sunday night before traveling to Stillwater.
Last Time Out
Five players scored in double figures, including a team-high 15 by Tony Allen, as Oklahoma State defeated Athletes First, 90-82, last Wednesday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Ivan McFarlin had 14 points and seven rebounds, while John Lucas also had 14 points while adding six rebounds and five assists. Daniel Bobik scored 11, all in the first half, while Stephen Graham had 11 in 18 minutes. OSU led by as many as 20 with 3:17 remaining, but former Cowboy Joe Adkins scored 14 of his game-high 33 points over the final minutes to make the game respectable. About EA Sports
EA Sports Southwest All-Stars is wrapping up its 13-game exhibition tour through the west and midwest, and brings to Gallagher-Iba Arena a 2-8 record prior to a game Sunday night at New Mexico. The All-Stars defeated Cal State-Northridge, 88-82, in their second game of the tour, but lost four straight before dropping Oregon State, 93-83, in overtime. They have lost their last three matchups, including a 22 point loss at Texas Tech, their only other Big 12 opponent. The All-Stars are led by 6-0 guard Brett McFall, who is averaging 13 points a game over the last five contests.
Pokes Ranked in both Preseason Polls
For the sixth time in the Eddie Sutton Era, Oklahoma State opens the basketball season ranked in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Cowboys are ranked 25th in the AP poll, and begin the season ranked 24th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. OSU is one of five Big 12 teams ranked in the preseason polls. Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas are also ranked in both polls, while Colorado and Texas Tech are receiving votes.
Cowboys Excell in Exhibition Contests
Oklahoma State has been very successful in exhbition games over the years, including a 25-1 mark in the Eddie Sutton Era in preseason contests. That one loss came against the Athletes First squad on Nov. 9, 2000, with the traveling squad coming away with a 96-95 win over the Pokes in Enid, Okla. Prior to 2000, the Cowboys had won 22-consecutive exhibition contests. The 22-game win streak dated back to Nov. 22, 1988, when the Cowboys lost, 80-63, to an outstanding USSR team  led by Sharunas Marchulenis, Arvidas Sabonis and Alexandr Volkov  that team also defeated Kansas that month.
Sutton Successful with Division I Transfers
Coach Eddie Sutton has long been known as a successful coach with the uncanny ability to bring out the best in his players. That has never been more evident than in his ability to take Division I transfers and transform them into productive players. Former players like Sean Sutton (transfer from Kentucky), Brooks Thompson (Texas A&M), Doug Gottlieb (Notre Dame) and Victor Williams (Illinois State). A total of 12 players from other schools have transferred to OSU in the Sutton Era prior to last season. This year's roster includes five players that came to OSU after spending time at another Division I school. That includes Jason Miller (North Texas), Daniel Bobik (BYU), Joey and Stephen Graham (Central Florida), and John Lucas (Baylor).
Coming Up
Oklahoma State will open the regular season on Friday night as the Cowboys host Northwestern State of Louisiana at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Next Wednesday, Nov. 26, the Pokes will host Colorado State at the Mabee Center in Tulsa on the ORU campus. Tickets are still available for both contests. Tickets for the OSU-CSU game in Tulsa are $25.50 for the upper bowl and $28.50 for the lower bowl. Oklahoma State is 14-1 in the Mabee Center since Coach Sutton's arrival in 1990, and the Rams were 19-14 a year ago, losing to Duke by 10 points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Cowboys Predicted to Finish Fifth in Conference by Writers, League Coaches
In preseason polls conducted by the Big 12 Conference office, Oklahoma State has been predicted to finish fifth in the league by both the conference coaches and writers that regularly cover the area. Individually, Tony Allen received votes for the preseason All-Big 12 squad.
