TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State's soccer team captured the title at the 2002 Mazzio's Oklahoma Shootout Sunday night by defeating Tulsa, 3-1, for the first time in program history.
Krista Dedmon was the first Cowgirl to strike, finding the back of the net at the 6:13 mark. Nikki Wojtowicz played the corner that was deflected off a TU defender, allowing Dedmon to score.
The remainder of the first stanza was frustrating for both teams, as neither was able to score despite several close calls.
The standstill was broken in the 69th minute of the game when Courtney Robb fed Kim Graves the ball and the Tulsa, Okla., native angled the shot in from the goal line.
With nine minutes remaining in the contest, Carla Dolomont sent a beautiful shot over goalkeeper Kelly Wilson's head to give the Cowgirls a three shot advantage and some breathing room.
TU squelshed hopes of an OSU shutout 30 seconds later when Holly Lorman and Jamie German combined for the goal.
For the third consecutive game, OSU won by a score of 3-1. The win over Tulsa was the first in program history and the Cowgirls are 1-2 against Tulsa all-time.
The Cowgirls claimed the tournament title by posting a 2-0 record over the weekend and edging Oklahoma by one point in goal differential. Four Cowgirls; Krista Dedmon, Kim Graves, Leah Carr and Kat Doud, were named to the all-tournament squad.
Oklahoma State (2-0) looks to continue the winning trend in its home opener at 5 p.m. on Friday against Louisiana-Lafayette.
