Auburn, Wash. - Oklahoma State junior Christi Cano carded a two-under-par 70, pacing the Cowgirls as they moved up four spots to 15th place at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships here Thursday morning. OSU is 10 strokes out of the top 10 with one round to go.
Arizona leads the team scoring with an 874, two strokes ahead of second-place Texas (876). Duke is three back at 877, while Auburn is in fourth with an 883. Florida and Georgia are tied for fifth at 884.
Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn sits atop the individual leaderboard with a 207 after carding a 70 during Thursday's round. She leads Georgia's Summer Sirmons by three strokes.
Cano began the day with a birdie on her first hole, the par-4, 380-yard 10th hole. A bogey on 12 moved her back to even, but with three-consecutive birdies, including a 30-foot putt on the par-3 16th, Cano turned in a 33 on her first nine holes.
Christi put her approach shot on the 518-yard Hole No. 1 within six feet, but failed to make the putt. She made nine-straight pars until No. 8, when she put her tee shot on the par-3 hole in the sandtrap. Cano blasted out of the sand to within eight feet, but missed the putt for a par-save. She finished with a 70, tying for the third-lowest round by a Cowgirl in an NCAA Championship.
Cano's 223 total puts her in 41st place individually. Senior Emma Zackrisson is in 47th place with a 224, while freshman Jenny Karr is in 59th place with a 226. Freshman Annie Thurman is in 77th with a 229, while junior Linda Wessberg has carded a 236.
Oklahoma, which was tied for third after two rounds, shot a 301 and has dropped to ninth place. Tulsa shot a 296 and is in 13th place entering the final day.
The tournament will conclude on Friday with a final round of 18 holes.
