PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team won its opening game at the Fun in the Sun Shootout on Monday evening, defeating Texas-San Antonio, 53-47, in front of 150 fans at the Playa Del Carmen Municipal Gymnasium.
The Cowgirls (2-5) got a career-high 17 points from freshman Lori Allen, who hit six of her seven shots from the field, and hit all 14 of their free throws in the second half to hold off the Roadrunners (0-7).
OSU began the game with an 8-2 run and held UTSA to a single field goal until the 14:13 mark of the first half. Allen and junior Trisha Skibbe combined to score 17 of the squad's 23 points in the stanza and help the Cowgirls take a five-point advantage into the break.
Meghan Craig, who made her first career start, hit a layup to extend the lead to eight at 43-35 with 4:32 left on the clock. The freshman finished the contest with nine points and led the team with a career-high seven rebounds.
The Roadrunners trimmed the Cowgirl lead to 45-43 at the two-minute mark on a three-point basket by Julie Rampley, but OSU hit six consecutive free throws down the stretch to pull away.
The Cowgirls will close out the event with a 6 p.m. contest on Tuesday against Oral Roberts.
