Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State shot 60 percent as a team and had five players score in double figures as the Cowboys defeated Global Sports, 86-63, here Tuesday night in an exhibition basketball game.
"I thought for our first outing, we played pretty well," said OSU Coach Eddie Sutton, entering his 33rd year as a Division I head coach. "Our first-half defense was outstanding. Because of our defense, I think we got some easy points."
Cheyne Gadson had a game-high 18 points for Oklahoma State, connecting on 9-of-13 shots from the floor. He also had a game-high six assists. Newcomer Tony Allen, a junior college transfer from Wabash Valley Community College, had 16 points for the Pokes, including 13 in the second half.
"Our main goal, right now offensively, is to run and get our buckets off our running game, and then get the rest off of defense," said Gadson. "We also have to work on our turnovers, because one of our goals was limiting them to 12. Tonight, we were way over that."
Oklahoma State committed 24 turnovers, while forcing Global Sports to turn the ball over 27 times.
OSU shot 60 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 36-of-60 shots. Allen was 6-of-7, while Gadson was 9-of-13. Senior Melvin Sanders chipped in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, and Victor Williams had 13 for the Cowboys. Janavor Weatherspoon, a juco transfer from Odessa College making his Cowboy debut, scored 10 points and grabbed five boards.
"I had butterflies in the beginning of the game, but I just fed of Cheyne's instinct and I felt right at home," said Allen, in his first game in a Cowboy uniform. "There was a lot of encouragement out there and I was able to pull through."
George Banks led the Global Sports squad with 17 points, while Damon Flint, who played at Cincinnati, chipped in 12. Daniel Watts had 11 rebounds for Global Sports.
Oklahoma State will play its final exhibition game of the season on Monday, Nov. 18, as the Cowboys take on the Branch West Basketball Academy in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
