Auburn, Ala. - Oklahoma State's Annie Thurman carded a two-under-par 70, and is tied for third place individually after the first round here Friday afternoon at the Auburn Tiger/Derby Invitational. The Cowgirls are in ninth place as a team, recording a 12-over-par 300, 11 strokes behind first-place Tennessee.
Thurman, who is ranked 17th nationally, shot 34-36 for her first-round score, and is one stroke back of first place. Summer Sirmons of Georgia and Auburn's Diana Ramage each scored a 69. Cowgirl sophomore Lisa Jean is tied for 14th place after the first round with a one-over-par 73, while sophomore Jenny Karr, playing as an individual, is tied for 33rd with a 76.
Senior Linda Wessberg is tied for 41st with a 77, while freshman Karin Sj?din shot an 80 and senior Christi Cano shot an 83.
Auburn, the host school, is two strokes back of Tennessee at 291 and is in second place. Duke and Texas are tied for third at 294, while Arizona and USC are tied for fifth at 296. Georgia (seventh at 298) and South Carolina (eighth at 299) both lead the Cowgirls.
The tournament will continue on Saturday with another round of 18 holes, and conclude on Sunday with a final round of 18.
