Cowgirl Golfers Finish Second At Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Trailing by five strokes entering the final round, Oklahoma State's top-ranked Cowgirl golf team shot a 296, four strokes better than Duke but falling one stroke shy of the team title at the Franklin Street Trust/Tar Heel Invitational here Sunday afternoon. Fifth-ranked Duke finished with an 877, one stroke better than OSU's 878.
Four Cowgirls finished in the top 15, including top-10 finishes by senior Christi Cano and sophomore Annie Thurman. Cano ended the tournament with a four-over-par 220, good enough for sixth place. Thurman was five over par and finished ninth.
Senior Linda Wessberg and freshman Karin Sj?din, the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for September, both finished tied for 15th with a 222. Sophomore Lisa Jean, who shot a 69 during the second round, finished in 36th place with a 228.
The Cowgirls outdistanced eighth-ranked Ohio State by 10 strokes, and finished ahead of six teams ranked in the top 25. Oklahoma State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 1, in the Auburn Tiger/Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
