Dark Defeats Light In Basketball Bash Scrimmage

Stillwater, Okla. - In an abbreviated scrimmage, the Dark Team, led by senior Andre Williams' 10 points, defeated the Light Team, 32-26, here Saturday afternoon in the 2002 edition of the Basketball Bash. The afternoon began with an introduction of the Cowgirl Basketball squad, led by first-year coach Julie Goodenough.
After the men's team was introduced, there was an eight-man three-point contest. Senior Victor Williams defeated freshman Julian Richardson in the finals, despite a 10 trey performance by Richardson in the semifinals.
Next was the slam dunk contest. Newcomers Joey Graham, a transfer from Central Florida, and Tony Allen, a junior-college transfer from Wabash Valley Community College, tied during the preliminary round for high honors. Allen defeated Graham in the finals, 46-45.
Once the scrimmage got underway, the two teams played two 10-minute halves. The Dark Team took a 12-11 lead into intermission, and outscore the Light Team, 20-15, in the second period for the six-point win.
Williams led all scorers with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while 7-2 center Frans Steyn had a team-high five rebounds. Senior guard Victor Williams had three steals, a game high.
For the Light Team, senior Melvin Sanders had nine points and six rebounds, a game high. Senior Cheyne Gadson had a game-high four assists and also had two blocks, tying Allen for game honors.
The Dark Team outshot the Light Team, 45.5 percent to just 38.7 percent.
Oklahoma State opens the 2002-03 season on Tues., Nov. 12 as the Cowboys host Global Sports in an exhibition game at 7 p.m.
