Stillwater, Okla. - Cowboy basketball player Maurice Baker has been listed as one of 50 candidates on the Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team, it was announced earlier this week. The top 50 candidates have been selected based on last year's individual performance and team records.
The 6-1 senior from Madison, Ill., averaged 19.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season, while also leading the team in shooting percentage (52.5 percent) and free-throw shooting (80.9 percent). This summer, he was a finalist for USA Basketball's World University Games team.
Baker was one of five players named to the Wooden list from the Big 12 Conference. Kansas' Nick Collison and Drew Gooden, as well as Texas' Chris Owens and Missouri's Kareem Rush, were nominated.
In late December, the Wooden Award committee will release the midseason top 30 during a half-hour program on Fox Sports Net.
On Tuesday, March 26, 2002, the 10-player Wooden Award All-America team will be announced. One member of the team will be selected on Sunday, April 7, 2002, as the recipient of the Wood Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year." The event will be a one-hour telecast on Fox Sports Net.
