OSU TO COMPETE IN CENTRAL REGIONALS
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl Golf team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., this week to compete in the NCAA Central Region Championships, hosted by Purdue University. The Cowgirls enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Central Region, behind Texas and Tulsa. This will be OSUs ninth-consecutive appearance in a regional tournament, dating back to the initial championship in 1993.
OKLAHOMA STATE IN REGIONAL COMPETITION
Oklahoma States top finish in a regional since they began in 1993 was a fourth-place outing in 1994. OSU has not finished in the top 10 in any other regional. However, the Cowgirls also advanced to the NCAA Championships in 1999 when they finished 10th at the West Regional and went on to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Tournament. OSU has had one individual medalist at the regional. Charlotta Eliasson won the individual title in 1994 with a three-round total of 214. Maria Boden shot a 213 last season and finished third.
OSU VS. THE FIELD
Oklahoma State is 33-12 this season vs. the other 20 teams competing in the regional. OSU is 5-0 vs. Nebraska, 3-0 vs. Minnesota, 5-1 vs. Oklahoma, 4-1 vs. Baylor and Texas A&M, 3-1 vs. Texas Tech, 2-1 vs. Texas, 2-2 vs. Purdue, 1-0 vs. LSU, Alabama, Kent State and Florida, 1-2 vs. Tulsa, and 0-3 vs. New Mexico State. OSU has not played in a common tournament with San Francisco, California, Central Florida, Idaho, Oral Roberts or Princeton.
COWGIRLS EARN POSTSEASON HONORS
For the third-straight year, senior Maria Boden has been named the Big 12 Conferences Golfer of the Year. She earned her third award prior to winning the 2001 Big 12 Individual title. Boden was also named first-team All-Big 12 for the fourth time, while sophomore Linda Wessberg earned second-team honors for the second-consecutive year.
FIVE NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12
All five starters on Oklahoma States squad have been named Academic All-Big 12, this season, including three first-team members. Senior Maria Bod?n (4.00 grade point average), junior Emma Zackrisson (3.86 GPA) and sophomore JoAnn Heller (3.33 GPA) were all named to the first team, while sophomores Linda Wessberg (3.09 GPA) and Christi Cano (3.05 GPA) were both named honorable mention. It was Bod?ns third honor and Zackrissons second. Heller, Wessberg and Cano were all first-time honorees.
BODEN CLOSING OUT DOMINATING CAREER
For the third-straight year, senior Maria Boden earned Big 12 Conference Golfer-of-the-Year honors, and sits atop the Big 12 Conferences leaderboard with a 74.03 strokes-per-round average. The 5-5 linkster from Holmsund, Sweden, has had an amazing career at Oklahoma State. In 44 tournaments in her four-year stint at OSU, she has won eight tournaments, finished in the top five on 19 occasions, the top 10 in 28 tournaments and the top 20 on 36 occasions. She is a two-time Big 12 Champion (1999 and 2001) and was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year her freshman season. Her career stroke average of 74.53 is the best-ever at Oklahoma State by nearly two strokes over Eva Dahllof, a three-time All-American. Bod?n is a two-time All-American herself, earning second-team honors in 1999 and first-team accolades in 2000.
THE SWEDES HAVE IT
Three of Oklahoma States golfers are natives of Sweden, and all three rank in the top 10 of the Big 12s top individuals. Senior Maria Bod?n leads the league in stroke average at 74.03 strokes per round, while sophomore Linda Wessberg is seventh with a 75.33 stroke average. Junior Emma Zackrisson is ninth with 75.57 strokes per round. All three also rank in the top-75 nationally according to the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. Bod?n is ranked 20th individually, while Wessberg is 59th. Zackrisson ranks 73rd nationally. Tulsa, Texas and New Mexico State are the only other teams in the Central Regional that have three individuals ranked in the top 75.
WEEKS SUSTAINS GOLF SUCCESS
Coach Amy Weeks, in her first year at the helm of the Cowgirl Golf program, has sustained the success that Ann Pitts built at Oklahoma State. This season, Oklahoma State won four tournaments, and finished in the top five on three more occasions. Those four tournament victories ties for the third-most in a single-season in the programs 25-year history.
