HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Oklahoma State's 10th-ranked Cowgirl golf team leads the NCAA Championships following the first round Tuesday afternoon. OSU shot a 293 here on the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort, two strokes better than second-place UCLA. Cowgirl Maria Boden shot a two-under-par 70, the second-best round of the day.
Boden was even at the turn with two bogeys and two birdies. The senior carded two birdies on the back nine for her two-under score. Laura Moffat of UCLA was the only individual to better the Cowgirl senior's score, carding a 69.
OSU leads 25th-ranked UCLA by two strokes and No. 4 USC by three strokes. Fifth-ranked Stanford, No. 6 Georgia and seventh-ranked Texas are in a three-way tie for fourth at 298.
The Cowgirls' 293 was the second-lowest in school history at an NCAA Championship. OSU shot a 291 at the 1988 Championships in Las Cruces, N.M. Boden's 70 ties for her lowest score in 12 rounds at the NCAA's. She also shot a 70 in the first round of last year's Championships in Sun River, Ore.
Three of the Cowgirls birdied the par-five 17th hole. Junior Emma Zackrisson reached the green in two before three-putting. Sophomore Linda Wessberg attempted the same, but put the ball in the water just in front of the pin. She finished with a bogey on the hole, one of just three on the day for her, who finished with a one-over 73.
Sophomore Christi Cano negated two bogeys by shooting birdies on both the par-four fourth hole and No. 17. Cano had a double bogey on on the par-four seventh hole for a total of two-over 74.
Zackrisson finished with a four-over 76, including one birdie. Junior Julie Jacques, the Cowgirls' No. 5 player, had two birdies but shot over par on nine holes for an 87.
The tournament will continue with three more rounds of 18 holes each on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Cowgirls will tee off starting at 11:50 a.m. EST on Wednesday.
