Cowgirl Softball Finishes 2-1 In Pool Play

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Oklahoma State's softball team finished pool play with a 2-1 record as the Cowgirls will open bracket play at 9 a.m. Saturday here in the UTA/Isuzu Intercollegiate Tournament.
Oklahoma State defeated Stephen F. Austin, 5-1, and Illinois-Chicago, 5-0, before falling to Louisiana-Monroe, 7-3.
In the first game, Oklahoma State took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Stephanie Hodges. Stephen F. Austin tied the game right away, scoring a run of its own on three-straight base hits.
OSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run triple by senior Amanda Hayes, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Realmuto. The Cowgirls added two insurance runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Jade Lindly and Hodges.
Sarah Knife Chief pitched five innings to pick up a win in her first outing since being sidelined by a shoulder injury early last season. Hodges went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
In game two, the freshman pitching duo of Tiffany Paper and Kara Wentworth combined for a one-hitter, nearly a perfect game, en route to the shutout win over Illinois-Chicago.
Paper started and faced the minimum through four complete innings, giving up a walk to start the fourth. The runner was later thrown out on a double play. Wentworth gave up a base hit in the sixth with one out, but that was all for the Flames.
OSU scored three in the top of the first, including two on a single by juco transfer Angela Veronesi. The Cowgirls added two in the fifth on a two-run home run by Lindly, the first of her career.
In the third game, the Cowgirls gave up four runs in the third before finally scoring in th ebottom of the fifth. Ahead, 4-3, Louisiana-Monroe scored three more in the sixth for the win.
Oklahoma State (2-1) will play either Texas-Arlington or Bethune-Cookman at 9 a.m. in single-elimination bracket play of the tournament.
