MALIBU, Calif. - George Washington withstood a furious rally from the Oklahoma State women's basketball team in the closing minutes of Friday's first-round matchup at the Pepperdine Holiday Classic, holding on for a 60-58 win at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Cowgirls (6-5), who were down by nine with four minutes to play, cut the deficit to six with 31 seconds left on a three-point basket by Kara Faulk. OSU then trimmed the Colonials' lead to three with four ticks remaining on a pair of Thia Willis free throws.
GW (5-5) turned the ball over on the inbounds play and Lindsey Davidson fouled Faulk on her three-point attempt with two seconds left, giving the Cowgirls a chance to tie the game. However, the senior forward missed two of her three attempts to seal the outcome.
OSU held a 33-27 advantage after the first 20 minutes and were fueled by sophomore Trisha Skibbe's double-double (10 points, 11rebounds) in the half. The Oxford, Kan., native finished the contest with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
The Colonials grabbed the early lead, but saw it evaporate after a five-minute scoring drought that saw the Cowgirls build an eight-point first-half lead.
OSU will return to action tomorrow at 5 p.m. (CST) in the consolation game against Brown.
