GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Oklahoma State's softball team picked up two wins after losing its first game of the year and finished second in its pool in the UTA/Isuzu Motors Invitational here Friday. The Cowgirls defeated Louisiana Tech, 11-0, and Texas-San Antonio, 9-3, after a 7-3 loss to Auburn in the first game.
In the first game, OSU gave up four runs in the bottom of the first and couldn't recover in a 7-3 loss. Senior Christina Shaddox hit a solo home run in the fourth, and sophomore Paula Garman added a two-run shot in the seventh, resulting in all of OSU's runs.
In game two, the Cowgirls' Lauren Bay threw a two-hit shutout, giving up just one walk while striking out 10 La Tech batters. Meanwhile, the offense got started early when freshman Ryan Realmuto hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first inning.
OSU added two more in the second with two two-out RBIs, and added three more in the third on back-to-back-to-back hits. Stephanie Hodges rounded out the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth.
In the third game, Oklahoma State scored two runs early on a two-run double by Shaddox, and took a 4-0 lead in the fourth on a double by Casey O'Neill and a single by Garman.
The Roadrunners cut the lead in half in the fifth, but the Cowgirls scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to five straight base hits and a three-run double by senior Liz Silva. UTSA threatened in the top of the seventh when Sharon Michalsky led off with a home run, her second of the game, and with two runners on, Michelle Briggs hit what appeared to be a home run to straight-away centerfield. However, Garman lunged over the fence and pulled the ball back fair for the out.
Oklahoma State (2-1) will play the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-2) Saturday morning at 9 a.m. A win would pit OSU vs. Illinois-Chicago (3-0) at 3:15 p.m., while a loss would move the Cowgirls into the losers' bracket at 3:45 p.m.
