GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Oklahoma State's softball team picked up two wins in bracket play here Saturday afternoon in the UTA/Isuzu Motors Invitational, defeating Tulsa, 2-1, in the first round and Illinois-Chicago, 1-0, in the second.
Pitching played a major roll in both games Saturday as both games were decided by one run. In the first game, OSU gave up a single run in the top of the fourth. A two-run home run on a 3-2 count by sophomore Paula Garman gave the Cowgirls a one-run lead and the win. It was Garman's second home run in five games.
In game two, freshman Lauren Bay threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout and the Cowgirls defeated No. 22 Illinois-Chicago, 1-0. The Cowgirls scored their lone run in the top of the fifth, when Nicci Quiroz, who was running for Ryan Realmuto, went to third on a base hit by Lezli Leathers and scored on a single by Jenny Kipp.
"We've played very tough defensively," said OSU Assistant Coach Kim Ward. "Our pitching has been good enough to win games, and our hitting has been very key, very clutch. We've improved in every aspect, and we're getting better."
Oklahoma State (4-1) will play Northwest Louisiana in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 9 a.m. Should the Cowgirls win, they will play the winner of Arkansas and Bethune-Cookman at 11:30 a.m. The chapionship game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
