CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Oklahoma State's Jennifer Crow tied a career high with 28 points, but the Cowgirls were just 14-of-26 from the free-throw line and fell, 80-76, to the West Virginia Mountaineers here Friday afternoon in the Charleston Coliseum.
Crow, a senior from Corn, Okla., was 9-of-21 from the field, 8-of-11 from the stripe and had nine rebounds. She also dished out six assists. Sophomore Kara Faulk led all players with 11 rebounds.
The Cowgirls trailed, 36-32, at halftime, thanks in part to six three pointers by WVU. Oklahoma State came out more aggressive in the second half, outrebounding the Mountaineers, 30-13, in the final period. OSU even led West Virginia by five with 3:40 remaining in the game at 73-68.
Freshman guard Chantoya Hawkins also came to life in the second half, scoring all 12 of her points in the second stanza. But, the Mountaineers connected on two easy layups, including one traditional three-point play, to tie the game with 1:46 to go.
Hawkins made 1-of-2 free throws to put OSU up once more at 74-73, and after a three pointer by WVU's Christin Annie, Hawkins hit another jumper to tie the game at 76 with 35 seconds left. Brandi Batch scored a bucket and was fouled with :23 remaining, and made the free throw to put the Mountaineers up, 79-76.
Several three pointers by OSU's guards failed to connect in the waning minutes and another free throw completed the final score.
Three other Cowgirls scored in double figures, with Tari Cummings, Hawkins and Toya Releford each chipping in 12 points. Cummings, the second-leading scorer on the team, left the game with 8:57 in the second period with a sprained ankle.
Oklahoma State (7-4) will return home for a Monday, Jan. 3, contest with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST.
