COLUMBUS, Ga. - Oklahoma State's 15th-ranked softball team picked up two wins on the first day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic here Friday at the South Commons Stadium Complex. The Cowgirls defeated Central Michigan, 7-3, before defeating 14th-ranked Stanford, 4-3, in eight innings.
In the first game, Sheryl Anderson scattered seven Chippewa hits and threw a complete game while All-American Jaime Foutch provided the offensive spark, going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Freshman Jenny Kipp scored two runs for the Cowgirls and added two RBIs. Anderson picked up her first win of the season.
In game two, it was a bit more exciting as Stanford took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and OSU responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. The Cowgirls added a run in the second, but the Cardinal went ahead, 3-2, with two runs in the fifth. Oklahoma State tied the score in the sixth, sending the game into extra innings.
After setting down Stanford in the top of the eighth, and using the international tiebreaker rule, Kristine Garcia was placed on second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Foutch. With two outs, Garcia scored on a base hit by senior Melissa Turley, picking up the win.
Sarah Knife Chief (5-1) picked up the win, going the distance. She gave up just five hits and one earned run in the victory. Liz Silva went 2-for-4 in the game with a double, while transfer Shelly Graham went 2-for-3 with a triple.
Oklahoma State (6-5) returns to action on Saturday afternoon as the Cowgirls play Northeast Louisiana at 12:30 p.m. EST. The tournament bracket will be played following the afternoon games.
