Cowboys’ comeback attempt falls short versus No. 8 Baylor

STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State's men tennis fell to eighth-ranked Baylor 4-1, on Thursday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowboys moves to 14-7 on the season and 1-3 in Big 12 play. Baylor improves to 14-7 on the season (2-1). The match took over three and a half hours, with the heat playing a factor all night long. Despite the score, the Cowboys were just a couple of points away from shifting the match in their favor.
Starting with doubles, court one saw No. 69 Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz of Baylor defeat Nicolas Kobelt and Aaron Williams of Oklahoma State, 7-5, in hard fought match. Then on court two the Bears duo of Conner Van Schalwyk and Luc Koenig defeated OSU's Derek Pham and Charlie Valentine, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Bears.
With the doubles clinched, court three saw Alessio Basile and Haydar Gokpinar push Baylor's court three pairing to multiple match points, but the match was abandoned.
To start single play, on court three Baylor's Conner Van Schalwyk defeated Derek Pham, 6-3, 6-3. On court one, Devin Badenhorst defeated Alessio Basile, 7-5, 6-3 to claim a point for the Bears.
Down 3-0 the Cowboys mounted a furious comeback attempt. The Cowboys needed all four third sets to take the match and pushed Baylor to the brink, with every third set going 10-plus games.
Giving the Cowboys their first point of the match, Williams took down Luc Koeing, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In a thriller of a match to secure the game, Baylor's Louis Bowden defeated Gokpinar, 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (6).
With the match settled, courts two and four would end up going unfinished, with Nicolas Kobelt tied, 5-7, 6-4, 6-6 on court two and Ian Bracks leading, 2-6, 6-4, 6-5 on court four.
Oklahoma State will travel to Orlando to take on the No. 12 UCF Knights on April 2 at 5 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
