Opening Tips:
- The Oklahoma State Cowboys look to salvage the back half of a two-game desert road swing Tuesday night when they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils at Desert Financial Arena.
- This is the Cowboys' first visit to Tempe since 1996. They won the first Big 12 era matchup between the schools last February in Stillwater and lead the all-time series 6-3.
- While the teams haven't gone head-to-head this season, OSU and ASU have already crossed paths once-- in December's Jerry Colangelo Classic. OSU defeated Grand Canyon in the first game of a doubleheader at the Phoenix Suns' Mortgage Matchup Center and ASU knocked off Oklahoma in the nightcap.
- OSU is looking to bounce back after Saturday's 37-point loss at Arizona. Three days after scoring 99 in an upset of No. 16 BYU, the Cowboys managed just 47 points on 24.6% shooting against the nation's No. 1 team.
- With a win over ASU, the Cowboys (16-7) would match their 2024-25 victory total (17-18) and strengthen their case for an NCAA at-large bid.
- A key selection committee metric has the Pokes at 0.97 Wins Above Bubble, meaning the average "bubble team" would have roughly one fewer victory against OSU's schedule.
- OSU is 1-4 on the road this season but three of those losses have come to teams currently ranked 1, 5 and 16 in the AP Poll. The other came on a last-second basket at TCU.
- The Arizona loss took a bite out of the Cowboys' season averages, but they still rank among the top 30 nationally in scoring (84.8 ppg) with nine games of 90-or-more.
- OSU is 16-0 this season when putting at least 81 points on the board but 0-7 otherwise. Opponents are averaging 80.7 per game.
- OSU has ridden the hot hand of Anthony Roy (17.8 ppg) for much of the season. The senior ranks among the national leaders in three-pointers per game (14th, 3.40) and percentage (10th, .439). He's also shooting a league-best .877 at the foul line.
- Senior forward Parsa Fallah (13.6 ppg, 59.0 FG%) is the team's top rebounder at 6.2 per game.
- Guards Kanye Clary (5.0 apg) and Jaylen Curry (4.0 apg) lead one the nation's most aggressive attacks (10th in KenPom adjusted tempo).
Â
On This Date: Feb. 10
- 2007 – Mario Boggan's three-point play with 4.1 seconds left in double-overtime snapped an 89-all tie and lifted the 17th-ranked Cowboys to an eventual 93-91 victory. Boggan played 48 of the 50 minutes and finished with 35 points and 14 rebounds.
- 2018 – Lindy Waters hit a go-ahead three with half-a-minute to go and Jeffrey Carroll delivered a game-sealing dunk to give the Cowboys an 88-85 upset at 19th-ranked West Virginia.
Â
Last Time on Cowboy Basketball:
Saturday, Feb. 7 in Tucson, Ariz. | #1 Arizona 84, OSU 47
- No. 1 Arizona stifled OSU's high-scoring offense to become the first 23-0 team in Big 12 history.
- The Cowboys came in averaging 86.5 points but were held to a season-low 47 on 24.6% shooting -- their lowest percentage ever in a Big 12 game.
- Anthony Roy (10 points) was the only Cowboy in double-figures. The first of his three triples gave OSU an early 6-4 lead, but the hosts responded with a 17-3 run, fueled by layups and putbacks.
- OSU scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to 25-18 on Christian Coleman's fastbreak slam with 7:38 to play in the half but went more than six minutes without scoring again.
- Arizona led 40-22 at halftime and opened the second half on a 15-3 run, capitalizing on another six-and-a-half minute OSU scoring drought.
- The Wildcats outscored the Cowboys, 54-14, in the paint and won the rebounding battle, 56-35.
Â
Arizona Leftovers:
- A total of 13 Cowboys saw action, including freshman big man Mekhi Ragland, who appeared for the first time in conference play and came away with his first Big 12 basket late in the second half.
- Anthony Roy scored in double-figures for the 19th time in 20 games in a Cowboy uniform.
- Roy is averaging 3.40 threes. Only Randy Rutherford (3.95 for the 1995 Final Four Pokes) has averaged more over a full season.
- OSU's 0.63 points per possession were a Lutz Era low and 47 points were the fewest since a 60-47 loss to Houston in last year's Big 12 opener.
- Arizona's 56 rebounds tied for the second-most ever by an OSU opponent in Big 12 play. The Cowboys were outrebounded 57-50 in an 83-81 win over Oklahoma on Jan. 20, 2018.
Â
Streaks & Trends:
- Kanye Clary handed out three assists in 27 turnover-free minutes. The junior guard has posted more assists than turnovers in each of his last 20 games -- three shy of Doug Gottlieb's OSU record, set 27 years ago.
- Anthony Roy has made at least one three-point field goal in each of his last 19 contests -- the longest Cowboy streak in the last seven seasons and one of the 10 best runs in OSU history.
- 81 has been the magic number for OSU under Lutz. The Cowboys are 26-0 when scoring that many points (16-0 this season).
- OSU is 12-1 this season when leading at halftime (27-3 overall under Lutz). The lone loss came at TCU on Jan. 20.
- Under Lutz, OSU is also 13-0 when out-shooting its opponent (24-4 Lutz era) and 12-0 (24-5) when winning the rebounding battle.
- In their win over BYU, the Pokes topped the 90-point mark for the ninth time this season -- the second-highest total in program history (12 in 2016-17).
Â
One of Three 30-Point Trios:
- 17 Big 12Â players have posted 30-point games this season. Three of them are Cowboys.
- Anthony Roy, Jaylen Curry and Vyctorius Miller are just the third trio in OSU history to post 30-point games in the same season.
- Brooks Thompson, Bryant Reeves and Randy Rutherford were the last in 1993-94.
- Incredibly, Thompson, Reeves and Fred Burley all did it in the same game during a 114-85 win over Oral Roberts late in the 1992-93 season.
Â
The Series with Arizona State:
- This is the tenth meeting between the schools in a series that dates back to 1965.
- The Cowboys lead 6-3 but are winless in two previous trips to Tempe -- the last coming 30 years ago.
- Almost a year ago to the day, OSU won the first Big 12 era meeting -- played on Super Bowl Sunday in Stillwater -- by an 86-73 count.
- OSU has won all three games in Stillwater, including the series debut more than 60 years back (Dec. 9, 1965). It featured the programs' all-time wins leaders, Henry Iba and Ned Wulk.
- Two years later, Wulk's squad returned the favor in the semifinals of the ASU Sun Devil Classic.
- OSU won an overtime affair at the 1973 New Mexico State Road Runner Classic behind Andy Hopson's 20 points and 20 rebounds.
- The five other meetings took place in consecutive Decembers between 1993 and 1997 under head coaches Eddie Sutton and Bill Friedler.
- On Dec. 2, 1993, Sutton's eighth-ranked Pokes won a neutral court matchup in Tulsa. Bryant "Big Country" Reeves supplied 34 points on 13-of-16 shooting and 16 rebounds.
- The following year, an ASU team that would eventually play in the Sweet 16 hosted Final Four bound OSU in Tempe. Reeves finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, but ASU's Mario Bennett put up 22 and 14 in a 72-69 Sun Devil win. The following spring, both big men were selected in the first round of the NBA Draft (Reeves, sixth overall to Vancouver and Bennett, 27th overall by the hometown Suns).
- In December, 1995. Adrian Peterson scored 21 points, Jason Skaer had a double-double (16 pts, 13 reb) and Andre Owens collected 10 of OSU's 23 assists in a 90-85 win.
- OSU hit 11 threes in its 1996 return to Tempe but had difficulty solving Friedler's matchup zone, keyed by 6-7 Rodger Farrington. He totaled eight of ASU's 12 blocks in a 68-67 victory.
- The last of the five 90s meetings came at Oklahoma City's Myraid (Dec. 10, 1997), when OSU rallied from a 17-point first-half deficit to win 79-68. The Cowboys scored the last eight points of the first half to get within nine and opened the second half on a 15-2 run. Desmond Mason had 25 points and Brett Robisch (16 pts, 13 reb) and Adrian Peterson (13 pts, 11 reb) posted double-doubles.
Â
Last Meeting with Arizona State:
Feb. 9, 2025 in Stillwater | OSU, 86-73
- Six Cowboys scored in double-figures to help OSU win its first Big 12 era meeting with Arizona State.
- Jamyron Keller made 4-of-6 threes in a 14-point effort and five others chipped in 10 apiece.
- The Cowboys shot 44% to ASU's 33% and finished plus-12 on the glass. They outscored the visitors 15-7 on fast break opportunities and 32-16 in the paint. Both sides were 22-of-26 at the foul line.
- OSU used its depth to wear down an already depleted ASU team. The Sun Devils were without two suspended starters and lost a third (Jayden Quaintaince) to injury midway through the first half. A fourth -- center Shawn Phillips -- fouled out with just under 6:00 remaining.
- OSU jumped to an 11-2 lead and played the rest of the way from in front. Up 10 at halftime, the Cowboys used another 16-5 push early in the second half to grow the lead to 19 and protected it with timely free throw shooting. They sank 16-of-18 after halftime, including 13-of-14 over the final 5:40.
Â
Scouting the Sun Devils:
- Arizona State (13-20, 4-16 Big 12 last season) has an almost entirely crew for head coach Bobby Hurley's 11th season.
- ASU has faced the nation's 14th toughest schedule, per NCAA NET, with 11 Quadrant I games. However, with a win on Tuesday night, the Sun Devils (12-12, 3-8 Big 12) can match last year's overall and conference victory totals. They've defeated K-State, Cincinnati and Utah so far in Big 12 play and own top-40 non-conference wins over Texas and Santa Clara.
- ASU fell from No. 73 to 81 in the NCAA NET rankings, following Saturday's loss at Colorado, which moves Tuesday's contest from Quad I to Quad II territory on the OSU team sheet (road games must be against teams in the top-75 in order to qualify for the former).
- The Sun Devils have the nation's 68th most efficient offense, per KenPom, and are 113th on defense and 82nd in adjusted tempo.
- ASU is averaging 78.5 points per game – 17.6 of them at the foul line and 14.7 off fast breaks – while surrendering 79.3 points per contest.
- Pepperdine transfer Moe Odum is the team's top scorer (17.2 ppg) and one of the nation's best distributors. His 6.2 assists per game ranks third in the Big 12 and among the top-25 nationally. In addition, the 6-1 senior has knocked down 66 threes on 37.5% accuracy.
- A 7-foot-1 center with experience in Spain's ACB League, Massamba Diop (13.8 ppg, 59.0 FG%) is the Sun Devils' top rebounder (5.8 rpg) and shot-blocker (50 in 24 games).
- ASU has also gotten scoring production out of former NAIA All-American Anthony Johnson (13.4 ppg) and a core of mid-major transfers that includes 6-8 junior Marcus Adams (CSUN, 2nd Team All-Big West), 6-6 senior Allen Mukeba (Oakland, 2nd Team All-Horizon), 6-4 junior Bryce Ford (Toledo) and 6-11 sophomore Santiago Trouet (San Diego).
Â
A Cowboy win would...
- Be their third in a four-game stretch.
- Push their record to 17-7, matching their entire 2024-25 victory total (17-18) with eight regular season games still to play.
- Move them to within a game of .500 in league play (5-6) heading into a two-game homestand vs. TCU (Saturday) and Kansas (Wed., Feb. 18).
- Give them a split of their two-game desert road swing and boost their season road record to 2-4.
- Make them 7-3 all-time against ASU (2-0 Big 12).
- Be their first ever victory in Tempe (1-2).
A Cowboy loss would...
- Drop their record to 16-8 (4-7 Big 12).
- Make them 1-5 in true road games.
- Narrow their all-time series lead over ASU to 6-4 (0-3 in Tempe, 1-1 Big 12 era).
