Tucson, Ariz – Oklahoma State's women's basketball team earned an 88–69 road win over Arizona on Sunday afternoon, improving to 18–5 overall and 7–3 in conference play.Â
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 10–11 overall and 1–9 in conference action.
The opening quarter featured a back-and-forth battle until the Cowgirls closed on an 11–3 run over the final three minutes. Achol Akot sparked the early offense with a pair of layups, while Stailee Heard added two layups and two free throws to help OSU take a narrow advantage into the second quarter.
The Cowgirls took control in the second period, outscoring Arizona 25–11. Micah Gray caught fire early, scoring nine points in the period including a layup and a 3-pointer, while Heard added nine of her own, six coming in the paint. Oklahoma State carried a 46–30 lead into halftime.
Arizona opened the second half with a 10–2 run to cut the deficit to eight, but the Cowgirls quickly responded with a 12–0 run of their own. Akot and Heard combined for 20 points in the third quarter, with Akot dominating inside on five layups and a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the free-throw line. Heard also knocked down two 3-pointers as OSU pushed its lead to 71–49 heading into the final frame.
Despite a few late pushes from the Wildcats, Oklahoma State never let its lead slip in the fourth quarter. Gray poured in 11 points, including three three-pointers, and was the primary beneficiary of Jadyn Wooten's eight assists, three of which came in the final quarter.
The Cowgirls finished with three players scoring 20 or more points. Gray and Heard led the way with 23 points apiece, while Akot added 22. Heard recorded another double-double with 11 rebounds; Gray knocked down five three-pointers, and Wooten chipped in 12 points and eight assists in a strong all-around performance.
The Cowgirls will be staying in Arizona just heading north to Tempe to play Arizona State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.(CST)
