Summer Lee wins Texas State Invitational; Cowgirls finish runner-up in Florida
February 04, 2025 | Cowgirl Golf
The 21st-ranked Oklahoma State women's golf team earned a runner-up finish at the FAU Paradise Invitational and – competing more than 1,000 miles away -- Summer Lee became the program's first freshman medalist in five seasons with a one-stroke victory at the Texas State Invitational.
Lee was part of a trio of Cowgirls competing unattached this week at the Vaaler Creek Golf Course Blanco, Texas. All three placed among the top six.
Lee fired a final-round 74 on Tuesday to finish 2-under par – one stroke ahead of Texas State's Yvonne Chamness. She becomes OSU's 105th individual medalist and the first freshman to do since current PGA pro Maja Stark won the 2020 Hurricane Invitational. In addition, she become head coach Greg Robertson's 18th individual champion, the second-most in the program's 50-plus years of history.
"We are very excited for Summer (Lee) to get the first individual win of her college career, and to go wire-to-wire was very impressive," Robertson said. "This will certainly be something to help her gain some confidence and to build off of throughout the spring season."
Marta Silchenko (+1) and Sammie Miller (+4) also had career-best finishes in Texas, placing third and sixth respectively. Silchenko missed the fall due to injury but played well in her season debut, particularly on par-5's where she shot 8-under for the tournament and posted the field's best stroke average (4.33), while Miller's 37 pars were second only to Lee (38) among the 63 golfers in the field.
In Boca Raton, Fla. OSU shot 15-under par to place second out of 15 teams at the FAU Paradise Invitational.
"It was a struggle for the team today, but it's good for us to learn how handle those situations of being in contention going into the final round," Robertson said. "The team played very solid the first two rounds, so there are plenty of positives to take from this event. We have a couple of weeks before the next tournament to work on some of the things that held us back, particularly par 5 scoring."
The Cowgirls finished 13 strokes behind Oklahoma while outdistancing Big 12 rivals, Cincinnati, BYU and Texas Tech.
The Pokes had a tournament-best 3.90 par-4 scoring average and totaled 52 birdies on Osprey Point Golf Course's 6,200-yard, par-72 layout.
Four of the five Cowgirl entries finished under par and among the top-20 on the individual leaderboard.
Junior Grace Kilcrease fired a final-round 72 (E) to end in a tie for fourth. She's claimed top 10 finishes in each of her six tournaments – the longest Cowgirl streak since Isabello Fierro during the 2020-21 season.
Fellow junior, Thitaporn Saithip matched Kilcrease round-for-round, shooting an identical 68-71-72 to claim her own share of fourth-place, matching her career-best finish from last fall's Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate Challenge.
Ellie Bushnell (-2) claimed her fourth top-20 finish in six events, ending in a tie for 14thplace.
Freshman Tarapath Panya shot even-par and tied for 21st with rounds of 72-71-73, while fellow freshman Lucy Darr (+6) tied for 48th.
The Cowgirls take two weeks off before returning to Florida for the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational, Feb. 16-17 in Sarasota.
