February 13, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State had seven wrestlers ranked in the top six and its entire lineup inside the top 20 in the second edition of the coaches' ranking for the 2025 NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Luke Surber and Dean Hamiti Jr. both jumped one spot from the initial rankings on January 23, giving the latter the highest ranking on the team as the No. 2 wrestler at 174 pounds. At 197 pounds, Surber's bump to sixth brought him level with 141-pounder Tagen Jamison and 165-pounder Cameron Amine. Fantastic seasons by Troy Spratley (125 pounds), Dustin Plott (184) and Wyatt Hendrickson (HWT) had each placed third at their respective weight classes, while 10th-ranked 157-pounder Caleb Fish was the eighth Cowboy featured in the top 10. Reece Witcraft (133) and Carter Young (149) rounded out the group at Nos. 16 and 17, respectively.
The coaches' ranking is determined by a vote of 16 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the eight conferences. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. Wrestlers must have eight Division I matches in the weight class to be considered with at least one within the last 30 days.
Thursday also saw the release of the first Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), which notably listed Hamiti, Surber and Hendrickson all atop their weight classes.
The coaches' ranking and RPI are two of several criteria that will be evaluated by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee during the at-large selection and seeding process along with head-to-head competition, quality wins, conference tournament placement, results versus common opponents and win percentage. The third coaches' ranking, along with conference allocations, will be announced on February 27.
The 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place March 20-22 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
