Pham Captures Cowboy-Dominated UTR Stillwater

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's tennis junior Derek Pham took home the UTR Stillwater title on Thursday morning at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

The Cowboys dominated on home court all week, leading to a semifinal full of Oklahoma State tennis representatives: Pham, Haydar Gokpinar, Nicolas Kobelt and Charlie Valentine. In addition, OSU only suffered one loss during the group stages and only dropped one set in its 11 wins.

Pham, one of OSU's longest tenured Cowboys, cruised all week, including a signature group stage win over Utah State's Brody Nejedly-Krall, 6-2, 6-4. That led him to the playoffs, where he took down his teammate, Valentine, in straight-set fashion, before taking the title against Gokpinar, 6-2, 6-0.

Turkish native Gokpinar played inspired throughout the tournament, easily taking Group C, going undefeated, all in straight sets. The freshman's signature win came in the semifinals against teammate Kobelt, where he battled for just under three hours to comeback and advance to the finals, 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-4.

Fellow first-year Valentine took home a third-place finish for the week. The Amsterdam native was dialed throughout group play, only dropping one match and winning the other two in straight sets to advance to the semifinals. He would fall to Pham in the semifinals before claiming a tight victory over Kobelt in the third-place game, 6-3, 7-5.

Kobelt, coming off a doubles title at the Cowboy Classic, kept that momentum going as he took on the UTR Stillwater. Starting in the group stages, Kobelt blew past Group D, only dropping 16 total games and winning 38 of them. He closed out group play with a win over fellow Cowboy, Thomas Gadecki, 7-6(1), 6-4.

Gadecki came in as a substitute mid-way through the tournament and made the most of it. He was placed in the 13-16 playoffs where he strolled to a semifinal victory over Pavel Uppu, 6-4, 6-3, before taking 13^th place outright with a fiery win over Sean Grossman, 7-6(3), 6-4.

The Cowboys return to close out the fall at the UTR Waco and the Austin M25 from Nov. 17-23.
