Cowboy Basketball to face SMU in final exhibition tuneup
October 24, 2025 | Cowboy Basketball
DALLAS -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys travel to Dallas on Saturday for a 2 p.m. exhibition tipoff against the SMU Mustangs inside Moody Coliseum.

Television and radio coverage will not be available. Fans can purchase tickets at smumustangs.com or follow live stats at smumustangs.com/sidearmstats/mbball.
Â
This is the last of two exhibition tuneups for OSU, which previously knocked off defending SEC champion Auburn on Oct. 15 in Birmingham, Alabama. Anthony Roy and Isaiah Coleman scored 28 points each to go with 23 from Jaylen Curry in a 97-95 overtime thriller.
Â
OSU has won 36 straight public preseason exhibition games and 58 of its last 59. The lone blemish came Nov. 9, 2000 to Athletes First in a game played at Enid's Chisholm Trail Expo Center. The last loss prior to that came in 1988 against a Soviet national team led by Arvidas Sabonis.
Â
The Cowboys defeated the Mustangs twice last year – 89-78 in a preseason exhibition in Stillwater and 85-83 in an NIT second-round clash at Moody Coliseum. Bryce Thompson scored exactly 24 points in both games to lead the way.
Â
In that 2025 NIT contest, the Cowboys made 10-of-21 threes to help off-set SMU's blistering 12-of-21 performance. Abou Ousmane scored the go-ahead basket with 34 seconds remaining (the last of 13 second-half lead changes) and Brandon Newman stole a long inbound pass with 3.6 seconds remaining to preserve the win.
Â
The October game was OSU's first ever public exhibition against another NCAA Division I opponent, and OSU and SMU fans teamed up to raise several thousand dollars for charity.
Â
OSU head coach Steve Lutz spent four years as an SMU assistant under Matt Doherty (2006-10).
Â
Senior forward Robert Jennings II (who is from the south Dallas suburb of Desoto) is the only one of the three returning Cowboys who saw action last March against SMU.
Â
Lutz brought in 12 newcomers over the offseason, including seven Division I transfers. The Cowboys are picked 12th in Big 12 preseason poll and receiving votes in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll.
Â
SMU returns three starters, including preseason second team All-ACC guard Boopie Miller, from last year's team that finished 24-11 and one spot shy of the NCAA tournament cutline. The Mustangs were picked sixth out of 18 teams in the ACC preseason poll.
Â
The Cowboys will open their regular season with six home games over a span of 19 days, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 4 against Oral Roberts (7 p.m. CT, ESPN+). The first weekend action is Sunday, Nov. 9 when former Big 12 rival Texas A&M comes to Gallagher-Iba Arena (1 p.m., ESPN2).
