STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team has added Sergey Avdeyev to its staff as an assistant coach it was announced today by Cowboy head coach Dustin Taylor.
Avdeyev comes to Stillwater after a successful five-year run as head coach at UTSA where he was the 2023 Conference USA Coach of the Year.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Sergey and his family back to the state of Oklahoma and into the Cowboy tennis family. His understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a successful program will help Cowboy tennis continue its relentless climb in becoming one of the nation's elite," Taylor said.
"Sergey brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success as both an assistant coach where he helped lead a team to a national runner-up finish before becoming a head coach. He has built one of the top mid-major programs in recent years."
In 2023, his UTSA squad delivered a record-breaking campaign and one of the best seasons on record, tallying an 18-7 mark (third-best in school history) and finishing as the Conference USA runner-up and earned the program's first NCAA At-Large bid in UTSA's fifth appearance. UTSA reached as high as No. 34 in the national ITA standings and produced an NCAA-leading 14-match win streak that included six wins over ranked opponents, and was named ITA's Team of the Month for March 2023.
Avdeyev took over the program for the shortened 2019-20 season, which was canceled due to COVID-19, after serving as the associate head coach at Old Dominion where he had worked since 2016.
At ODU, he helped the Monarchs to the 2018 Conference USA title and was named the 2018 ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to his time at ODU, Avdeyev spent the 2016 season as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Oklahoma. He helped the Sooners to a 20-11 in 2015-16 and a run to the NCAA Championship match.
A 2009 graduate of OU, Avdeyev played in the No. 1 spot and was the Sooners' team captain his senior year.
"My family and I could not be more excited to be joining Oklahoma State and the Cowboy tennis family. It's a first-class program run by a distinguished coach. I am thrilled at the opportunity to work alongside DT. We once competed against each other in an NCAA final and now we will be building towards one together," Avdeyev said.
"Being from Oklahoma and having many friends and family there makes it a special place for our family."
Following his collegiate career, Avdeyev competed on the professional circuit for two years. A native of Kazakhstan, Avdeyev was ranked in the top 10 in his country and was also a member of the junior Davis Cup team for Kazakhstan.
Avdeyev also spent time at the Gorin Tennis Academy primary assigned to the development of Nikoloz Basilashvili, who went on to reach a career high of 16 in the ATP World Singles Rankings."
Avdeyev's hiring is pending a standard background check.
