Brian Musau Earns First Team All-America Honors in 5,000 Meters on Third Day of NCAA Outdoor Championships
June 08, 2024 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
EUGENE, Ore. – Oklahoma State men's outdoor track & field wrapped up their NCAA Championships Friday with Brian Musau placing fourth overall in the 5,000 Meters to give the Cowboys 11 total points on the weekend, finishing tied for 27th in the team standings.
The men's 5K final was incredibly tactical, with an elite field including four NCAA champions and a slew of All-Americans both in cross country and track. The entire field remained bunched together in one large group until the final two laps. Musau sat near the front of the pack until Harvard's Graham Blanks shot to the front and made the final two laps a sprint.
Musau eventually passed Blanks with 200 meters to go, finishing behind only a trio of national champions in North Carolina's Parker Wolfe, Northern Arizona's Nico Young and Stanford's Ky Robinson. The Cowboy freshman is just the fifth in program history to earn first team All-America honors in the 5,000 Meters, with the previous four listed below:
Jon Wild (1997)
Ryan Vail (2008)
Ryan Vail (2009)
Girma Mecheso (2012)
Brian Musau (2024)
Musau ends his historic freshman campaign that included a Big 12 cross country individual title, cross country, indoor and outdoor first team All-America honors, as well as an NCAA title as a member of the Cowboy Distance Medley Relay indoors. His eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships was vital to the Cowboys bringing home OSU's 53rd NCAA title and fifth overall on the grass.
Action at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships concludes Saturday with the women contesting the final 15 events. Heading into Saturday, the Cowgirls sit tied for seventh in the team standings with 11 points overall. The program record is 24 points set back in 2016, where the Cowgirls placed 12th (also a program best).
Saturday's schedule picks up with Bailey Golden and Olivija Vaitaityte competing in the final three events of the women's Heptathlon as well as Winny Bii, Gabija Galvydyte and Taylor Roe competing in the Triple Jump, 800 Meters and 5K Finals, respectively.
The entirety of the NCAA Outdoor Championships are broadcast live on ESPN2, with field events having their own dedicated streams on ESPN+. Live results for the meet can be found here.
