Zink Advances to Second Round of NCAA Singles Championship

STILLWATER – No. 24 Tyler Zink defeated No. 21 Garrett Johns, 6-3, 7-6(8), to advance to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Individual Championships on Monday morning at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Zink improved to 18-8 on the season, earning his eighth victory over ranked opponents. Johns closed out his singles season, moving to 16-7 on the year.
The first set featured back-and-forth play from the top-25 players. Zink took the first game, leading 1-0. Johns quickly rattled off two straight games to take the lead, but Zink won five out of the next six games to take the first set, 6-3.
He carried over the momentum to set two. He dominated early, going up 3-0, but Johns fought tough and brought it to an even 6-6 set score. Zink stepped up in the tiebreaker to win the match, 6-3, 7-6(8).
Zink will play in the round of 32 against Harvard's No. 15 Cooper Williams tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. CT. Doubles action will begin with Zink and Isaac Becroft in the doubles draw against Georgia Tech's Marcus McDaniel and Keshav Chopra tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. CT.
