Cowboy Basketball signs stat sheet stuffer Brantley
May 18, 2024 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State added scoring punch to its men's basketball roster with the signing of combo guard Khalil Brantley.
Â
The 6-foot-1 rising senior has been La Salle's leading scorer in each of the past two seasons. He put up 15.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 2023-24 while ranking fifth on the Atlantic 10 leaderboard in both assists (4.2) and steals (1.5).
Â
"Khalil gives us another veteran playmaker for our backcourt," OSU head coach Steve Lutz said. "He's not only a talented scorer and distributor but also a tough, hard-nosed defender who isn't afraid to get in there and fight for rebounds. I've enjoyed getting to know him and his family and look forward to welcoming them to ours."
Â
Brantley rarely left the floor for La Salle, averaging just under 36 minutes per game on his way to Philadelphia All-Big 5 status. He was one of only seven players nationally who averaged the combo of 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.5 steals. He also knocked down 103 free throws on 76.3% accuracy and 47 three-point field goals.
Â
Brantley reached double-figures 25 times in 32 games with a career-high 30 points in a November win over Southern Indiana. Later that month he clocked all 55 minutes in a triple-overtime game against Temple and finished with 29 points and 14 boards.
Â
Prior to La Salle, Brantley was a standout performer in the New York City Public Schools league, averaging 34.2 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a high school junior while leading Boys and Girls High School to the Brooklyn Class AA Division title. He earned offers from a handful of high major programs, including Oklahoma State, but fell off the recruiting radar his senior year when the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered high school basketball programs around the state.
Â
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brantley transferred to Our Savior Lutheran School in the Bronx for his senior year and played a national schedule through the Grind Session.
Â
Brantley is the seventh Division I transfer to sign with OSU this spring and the eighth member of the 2024 recruiting class, joining Abou Ousmane (6-10, F, Xavier), Brandon Newman (6-5, G, Western Kentucky), Devante "Devo" Davis (6-4, G, Arkansas), Arturto Dean (5-11, G, FIU), Robert Jennings (6-7, F, Texas Tech) and Marchelus "Chi Chi" Avery (6-7, F, UCF). PHHoenix Prep guard Jeremiah Johnson signed last fall.
