STILLWATER – Despite standout efforts from Isaac Becroft and Tyler Zink, Oklahoma State's men's tennis team came up short against No. 14 San Diego, 4-2, on Sunday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The loss moved the Pokes to 11-4 on the season, while San Diego improved to 10-2.
"Proud of the guys today, they got back up and back to work this week after a tough one last weekend and responded and put them in position to win again today," head coach Dustin Taylor said.
The Pokes started the dual with their closest doubles matches of the season. Court three started things off with OSU's freshman pairing of Goran Zgola and Erik Schiessl losing to San Diego's Lambert Ruland and Savriyan Danilov, 6-1.
The Pokes battled back forcing the other two matches into tiebreakers. Starting with Zink and Alex Garcia at center court. The duo took down San Diego's Sacchit Sharrma and Iiro Vasa, 7-6(4). The doubles point came down to court two where Becroft and Alessio Basile fell to Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen in a thriller, 7-6(5).
With the Toreros taking the 1-0 lead, the Pokes had work to do in singles. The Cowboys dropped the first two singles matches to fall behind, 3-0. The first setback came on court four where Schiessl suffered his first loss of the season, 6-3, 6-2, to Danilov. He moved to 8-1 with the loss.
Following Schiessl, No. 62 ranked Alex Garcia lost to No. 85 Vasa, 6-3, 6-4, on court three. This was the first loss of the season on court three for OSU, moving its record to 12-1.
With their backs against the wall, the Cowboys mounted their comeback attempt. Starting on court two with Becroft, who defeated Ruland in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(2). Becroft now has the best start to a season for a Cowboy since Lucas Gerch in 2014 with an undefeated record of 12-0.
No. 26 Tyler Zink followed Becroft with a historic performance of his own. Zink took down No. 5 ranked Tarvet in convincing fashion, 7-6(4), 6-1. This marked the highest-ranked opponent victory of the season for the Pokes.
The match was settled in a dual between Basile and Klaassen. The match was determined in two sets, both going to tiebreakers and both being won by Klaassen, 7-6(5), 7-6(6). With the match settled, Francisco Pini's tight match against Sharrma went unfinished, 1-6, 7-5, 4-2.
"These guys are tough, these guys are fighters, these guys get back up, they showed that today and we are confident that when we do fire on all cylinders, we will be right where we want to be when we need to be it," Taylor said.
The Pokes return to action on Tuesday night as they host No. 67 ranked Tulsa at the Greenwood Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
