Cowboy Distance Medley Squad Runs Sixth-Fastest Time in NCAA History at Arkansas Qualifier
February 16, 2024 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State men's and women's indoor track & field traveled east for a down-and-back trip to Fayetteville, Ark., for the final meet of the regular season in the Arkansas Qualifier.
The men's Distance Medley Relay squad of Brian Musau, DJ McArthur, Mehdi Yanouri and Ryan Schoppe kicked off the action for the Cowboys on Friday with the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history. The group split 2:50.87, 46.13, 1:49.41 and 3:53.34 over the 1,200-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter legs, respectively.
The Cowboys now own two of the top six times in collegiate history after setting the collegiate and world indoor record at the same meet in 2023. With their time, the squad likely punched its ticket straight to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, where they will look to defend their NCAA title in the event.
Later in the day, cross country All-American Victor Shitsama competed for the second time this season, finishing second overall in the 3,000 Meter with his time of 8:08.12. Rounding out the meet for the Cowboys was the men's 4x400 Meter Relay of Caio Almeida, Jordon Smith, DJ McArthur and Justin Smith. The relay just narrowly missed out on breaking their own school record as they recorded a second-place time of 3:07.65.
On the women's side, Gabby Hentemann opened her season with a third-place finish in the 3,000 Meters with a time of 9:27.88. Kessiah Bemis demonstrated her speed for the first time in the 200 Meters with her time of 24.26, which moved her into fifth on OSU's all-time list. She also placed second in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.82 meters.
Over in the throws arena, freshman Rachel Neaves took home a pair of top-5 finishes on the day in the Weight Throw and Shot Put.
Up next, the Cowboys and Cowgirls travel to Lubbock, Texas, for the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center. At last year's championships, the Cowgirls took home their first-ever track & field conference title, with the Cowboys securing a second-place finish overall.
