Cowboy Wrestling Cruises Past Oregon State, 36-3
November 17, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team cruised past Oregon State, 36-3, at Gill Coliseum Sunday evening, moving to 2-0 on the season and earning its eighth consecutive road dual victory, dating to last season.
The win also maintained a perfect record in the series for the Cowboys, who are now 24-0 all-time against the Beavers with a 10-0 record in Corvallis.
Sunday's 33-point margin of victory combined with the 38-6 win over Utah Valley in Friday's season opener gives Oklahoma State a combined advantage of 65 team points through two duals. It is OSU's largest two-dual score advantage and point total to start a season since 2007-08.
"It was good," coach David Taylor said. "It was a challenging trip for our guys for the first matches of the season to be away twice; Utah Valley and (Oregon State) – two really good wrestling environments and two good teams. It was good to see them. We have a lot of stuff we're working on and now we have things we can go back and improve. We have a short week and then wrestle Wyoming and Arizona State next week. Overall, it was good."
The Cowboys won of nine of the 10 individual bouts in Sunday's dual, highlighted by an upset win from Luke Surber over Oregon State's seventh-ranked Trey Munoz at 197 pounds, three total wins over ranked wrestlers and bonus-point wins from Tagen Jamison (141), Carter Young (149), Cameron Amine (165), Dean Hamiti Jr. (174), Dustin Plott (184) and Wyatt Hendrickson (HWT).
Surber's highlight win came via a first period takedown, a second period escape and a riding time point to defeat Munoz, 5-0, and earn his highest ranked victory since beating top-ranked Rocky Elam of Missouri on February 5, 2023.
It was the third of three ranked Cowboy wins on the day, as Troy Spratley started the dual with a sudden victory win over No. 24 Maximo Renteria at 125 pounds and Dean Hamiti Jr. earned an 18-1 technical fall over No. 33 Sean Harman at 174 pounds.
Hamiti wasn't the only Cowboy to win in dominant fashion before time expired, as Plott picked up a 24-8 technical fall over TJ MCDonnell, 24-8, and Hendrickson won a 16-1 technical fall over Brett Mower in just 4:38. The wins marked the second technical fall of the weekend for all three Cowboy wrestlers.
Jamison, Young and Amine's bonus point wins came via major decisions over Oregon State's Nash Singleton, Ayden Garver and Murphy Menke, respectively.
It was second bonus-point win of the weekend for Young and the season dual debut for Jamison.
OSU's Cael Hughes was also victorious in his season dual debut, as he took down Oregon State's Damion Elliott, 8-2, at 133 pounds.
Teague Travis nearly made it a clean sweep in all 10 bouts for the Cowboys, but Oregon State's 30th-ranked Ethan Stiles scored a takedown with 25 seconds remaining in sudden victory to earn the Beavers' lone win of the dual at 157 pounds.
The Cowboys return to action Friday, hosting Wyoming at 7 p.m. in the home opener at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU then hosts another home dual Sunday at 1 p.m. against Arizona State.
