Cowboy Tennis Duo Falls Short at ITA Regional Championships

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile fell one win short of qualifying for the NCAA Doubles Championships to Oklahoma's Bruno Nhavene and Oscar Lacides, 6-3, 6-2, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sunday.
The loss wrapped up a five-day regional in which the Cowboys went 19-8 in singles and 5-3 in doubles.
OSU had all six players in the main draw after Ian Bracks defeated Oral Roberts' Ibrahim Deniz, 6-1, 6-1 to get into the field.
Oklahoma State's Becroft and Basile opened as the No. 4 doubles team in the tournament. The duo bested North Dakota's Jerall Nasin and Leandro Zgraggen, 8-2, Wichita State's Joan Espinosa and Leo Linquet, 8-5, Oklahoma's Vojtech Petr and Jordan Hasson, 9-7, and the Shockers' Alejandro Jacome and Kristof Minarik, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6), before dropping the finals match.
Derek Pham and Thomas Gadecki split their matches, defeating North Dakota's Ethan Terry and Ange-Kevin Koua, 8-4, and losing to Oklahoma's Luis Valdes and Asahi Harazaki, 8-4.
Ian Bracks and Ty Wunderlich dropped their only match to Creighton's Ethan Neil and Rocky McKenzie, 8-4.
In the opening round of singles, OSU's Basile, Becroft and Pham picked up wins to advance to the second round. Becroft defeated Creighton's Alejandro Gandini, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, Basile took down Tulsa's Calum Jestin, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and Pham bested Omaha's Makhail Korkunov, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Bracks, Gadecki and Wunderlich all dropped their opening matches. In the consolation draw, Bracks lost to Nebraska's Calvin Mueller, 6-2, 6-4, Gadecki fell to North Dakota's Koua, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Wunderlich fell to Drake's Christian Winstead, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the second round, Becroft was bested by Arkansas' Jakub Vrba, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3, Basile defeated Arkansas' Connor Smillie, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) and Pham took down Tulsa's Connor Doig, 6-1, 6-2.
In the round of 16, Basile defeated Nebraska's Mueller, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, and Pham fell to Nebraska's Bruno Nhavene, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Basile's run ended in the quarterfinals after a loss to Oklahoma's Oscar Lacides, 6-2, 6-4.
Bracks went on to win the consolation bracket, winning six consecutive matches. The freshman defeated Tulsa's Reiya Komagata, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, Oklahoma's Petr, 6-1, 7-6 (3), Nebraska's Lars Johann, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3, Arkansas' Bozo Barun, 7-5, 6-4, Creighton's Kirtan Patel, via walkover, and OSU's Gadecki in the finals, 6-2, 6-2.
Gadecki took second in the consolation bracket to Bracks after defeating Drake's Benjamin Johnson, 6-2, 6-4, Oral Roberts' Parv Nage, 6-2, 6-3, and Oklahoma's Petr and Omaha's Ethan Gaubert, via walkover.
Wunderlich picked up his first two wins on the season, beating Wichita State's IlIas Worthington, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Creighton's Zachary Kuo via walkover. The sophomore dropped his last match of the weekend to Tulsa's Komagata, 6-1, 6-2.
The Cowboys are set to head to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Norman Future from October 21-27.
