Cowgirl Equestrian Set for Opener at TCU
September 30, 2024 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Basics:
Oklahoma State's fifth-ranked equestrian team travels south to face No. 3 TCU in the first matchup of the season. It will be each team's first Big 12 meet of the year. OSU is coming off another successful season, winning it's fourth-straight Big 12 title and making a fifth consecutive semifinals appearance in the national tournament. TCU is 2-1 with wins against SMU and Georgia. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon at Bear Creek Farms.
About the Cowgirls:
Head coach Larry Sanchez, in his 26th year at the helm, leads the Cowgirls alongside sixth-year assistant Laura Brainard, third-year assistant Carter Anderson, second-year assistant Alle Durkin and consultant Jody Brainard.
2023-24 Review:
Winning their fourth straight Big 12 Championship, the Cowgirls finished 9-7 overall and reached the semifinal round of the NCEA Championship. Under Western asisstant coach Laura Brainard, the Cowgirl Horsemanship unit compiled 38 wins and five MOPs while the reining squad tacked on 38 wins and four MOPs. The western squads collected 11 total wins in Ocala, Fla. at nationals.
Jumping Seat assistant coach Carter Anderson, in her second season at OSU, coached Riley Hogan to her second consecutive All-American award. Anderson also coached two Big 12 Riders of the Month and an NCEA Rider of the Month. Under Anderson, her fences team collected 44 wins, while the flat squad earned 37 wins. In Ocala, Fla. her teams earned seven total wins at the national tournament.
Conference Leaders:
The Cowgirls went 4-2 against Big 12 opponents last season, including two wins on their way to the program's first ever conference championship four-peat, something no team in the Big 12 had previously accomplished.
An Oklahoma State Win Would...
- improve its record against TCU to 29-15
- make OSU's record 7-10 in Fort Worth
- improve head coach Larry Sanchez' conference record to 70-35
- be its first win in Fort Worth since 2022
Who to Watch:
- Senior Riley Hogan is coming off another successful season, earning her second consecutive All-American selection. She went 12-4 in Fences and 10-5-1 in Flat in 2023-24, and earned four MOPs. She set the school Fences record against Baylor with a 95, beating the previous record by three points.
- Claire McDowall returns to OSU for her graduate year. She owns a career record of 30-8-1 and is coming off her second consecutive All-American selection. She looks to compile one of the highest win totals in Horsemanship in Cowgirl history.
- June Roberson came away with many crucial points for the Cowgirls in the 2023-24 season. The junior was named to the All-Championship Horsemanship team at the NCEA Championship and earned Big 12 Rider of the Month in March.
- Graduate Hannah Dodd shined in her senior season. She compiled a 7-2 record and scored a 92 in Flat, tying OSU's program record. The captain looks to put together another impressive season.
- Emma Filiatreau had an impressive freshman campaign in 2023-24. She went 10-5-1 in Reining and was named to the All-Championship Reining team at nationals. She looks to add onto her success as a sophomore.
- Senior Quincee Clark looks to lead the Cowgirls to another great season. The captain earned three MOPs last season against SMU, Fresno State and Baylor. She was also named to the APHA NCEA All-Academic First Team.
